Whyte S-150 29'' 2018

....with a 30T in Front it is according to my expirience more efficient (50/42) than my Niner WFO9 with 28T uphill (42/37). When I use the Niner WFO9 (SAG 27%) I have to lock the damper...otherwise is to much SAG uphill (between 10% and 20% gradient ) The White on the other hand has a SAG 25% and the damper in open mode shows less sag (uphill 10%-20%) then the WFO locked.....maybe you are interested in a real live feedback:)

To the Leverage ratio.....the Niner (with Debonair) is more supple but the White has a stronger middle section than the Niner....at the end of the travell the Niner has a little more progressivity.....but not much....with 70kg I use the full travell when I drop 1,5m into flats. (Without additional Spacers....)

With that gearing AS lines cross at 40mm of travel, and the Niner has a steeper AS curve, so it drops a bit after that and you get lower performance. In theory the Niner has a very good mid stroke, with lots of support, but AS forces play a role here and that's probably why it feels softer, It can be a diference in the shocks too, or maybe a mix of both things.

Anyway it's really nice when people post some feedback so we can see if it fit's the theory or not.

Best regards,
Tony.

Hello Antonio!
Thank you for your reply. I tried to meassure the differences. Road with 12% Gradient, same pedaling position on the bikes (Niner and Whyte).

Whyte: I have the 150 C RC with a dual position RS Deluxe. The lock of the damper is very firm. It reduces the SAG from 25% (Whyte recommendation...I use on drops the full travel) to 15%. So when you go uphill I have unlocked 27% SAG and locked 18% SAG. I thought I need a damper upgrade when I bought this bike....but I think for my 70 kg it works perfect.

Niner Wfo9: I have a Debonair (originally tuned for a Nomade...M/L tune. The original Monarch Plus I destroyed on a stone. (But had less suport in the middle travel section) With this damper (SAG 27% - recommendation of Niner...an the value where I use the full travel) a had uphill locked 30% an unlocked 32% SAG. So a little bit more ....an less firm over bumps.

For my purpose, only the first 3 gears are important for the efficiency. (steep dirt roads/trails in the alps up.....an down...only good braking performance......)

Thank you for your work!! You support the world wide MTB community with very good technical informations!

Best regards Kurt

Hola Antonio,

Miguel.

Hi Antonio,

Have you ever had a chance to test out any of the Whyte S-150 crs models? I assume the linkage ratio is exactly the same as those? I don't think anything has changed from 2018 - 2021 in the S-150, but I could be wrong.

I dind't check the carbon models to be sure they were the same, but they are probably the same.

Best regards,
Tony.

In your graphs it seems to show the Whyte s-150 as having only 145mm of travel instead of the advertised 150mm. Is this true?

Antonio Osuna dijo...

That happens a lot with this brand. It's not false advertising, but it's very hard to find, and the name of the bikes always make you think that's going to be the travel.

Best regards,
Tony.
