The PDC bike has a fairly impressive anti-squat curve (using the I-Track calculations) and kickback is almost non-existent.

Un saludoChrisnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4650400550712092979.post-24145215334613835502012-10-09T14:54:09.705+02:002012-10-09T14:54:09.705+02:00I think that the most influential component for 29...I think that the most influential component for 29er in the next years it's going to be the new XX1 drivetrain. Getting rid of the FD is going to make possible frames with tiny Chainstays: 415-425mm and that's going to be really great.

I think in the next years we'll see a few bikes with elevated chainstays, and maybe a few FS with High Pivots and Idlers pulleys... so better Axle path and also better pedalling.

Best regards,
Tony. In some ways perhaps but it is certain to have a less 'ideal' axle path (i.e. less rearward due to the less raked chainstay) than the 26in bike.

How important is this raked chainstay? Opinions vary, but most good 26in single pivot designs use it.

Implementing a 29in wheel using a design like the Zerode doesn't present any design problems (that I can see) that don't already exist for a 26in bike. Using the 29in wheel in more conventional designs however does present some problems - it is hard to get wheel path and anti-squat both right at the same time and kickback mitigation (i.e. by keeping the main pivot relatively low) involves compromising the wheel path to a degree.

I doubt whether single pivots (except for the Zerode) or split pivots can successfully migrate far beyond their 26in 'natural environment'. DW-links look to me to have limited powers of adaptation as well. Horst-links and other dual short link designs could fare better.

My comments may be thought to be naive or overly conservative, afterall a lot of 29ers like the ones I say are flawed already exist. If there is an evolutionary principle that applies to bike design we can expect to see many of these die a long death before some really good larger wheeled bikes prove their worth by surviving the test of time.
