Mondraker Foxy 29'' 2018

In this post I'm going to talk about the Mondraker Foxy Carbon 29'' 2019, a new model in the Mondraker lineup with 150mm of rear travel and 29'' wheels. The Mondraker Foxy has always been a Trail Bike, always at the shadow of the Dune, but this new version seems a bit roughter, with bigger wheels and better suspension components it's almost ready for the EWS...

As you can see in the excel table and in the last graphs, the new Mondraker Foxy 29'' has a very efficient system, with Anti-squat values over 100% in all the gears. AS values get a bit lower as the system goes deep into the travel (80% AS at 50% of travel...) but I still think this system is going to work really well with 25% sag and a 1x12 Drivetrain. The LR is not too progressive either and that's another reason to keep the bike with a "firm setup". Having a steep AS curve has Pros and Cons and in this example you can see how the Pedal Kickback (19%) is very low when you compare it with other bikes in the same category. Some people preffer a flatter AS curve but I think this kind of setup works better. Brake-squat (77%) on the other hand is a bit high, but that's completely normal in a Virtual Pivot System.

In the Leverage Ratio graph we can see that the system is Progressive-Regressive (2.6-2.3-2.55) and this is going to be the main problem of the bike. This Leverage Ratio is going to work really well with an air shock and I think the Fox DPX2 (205x62.5mm Trunion) is a really good option, but I'm not a big fan of the Fox X2 in the XR version... It's a great shock and it has a ton of tunning options, but the bike is designed around an air shock and the Fox X2 is not going to have enough Bottom Out protection. In Spain we ride mostly on natural trails, and here a Coil shock combined with a Linear suspension makes a lot of sense, that's probably why the Orbea Rallon is designed in a similar way, but if you are riding mostly on Bikeparks or Trail Centers with a lot of berms, jumps and features an air shock is going to work better.

Best Regards,
Tony.

Thanks Antonio for the Analysis. Im suprised Mondraker don’t try to repliythe Dunes leverage ratio. Must be a reason or its a mistake? We will see!

Will the anti-squat and the general performance of the bike will be affected negatively if I change the 32T chainring with a 30T oval one?

Live Aeons, that's a very small change and I think the bike it's going to work very well too. You only see big changes when people go crazy big or crazy small with the chainrings...

Best regards,
Tony.

Saludos

This is possible to write you if we have question about other things ? I have a question about air spring. (mail example)

And do you have the data about the new devinci troy ?

Thanks

Hola Antonio.
http://www.mondraker.com/es/es/faqs

Que opinas?

Un saludo.

Antonio Osuna dijo...

now having ridden the Foxy I can confirm it has been very well designed for technical trail riding. Traction is extremely good on rough and difficult terrain with excellent initial support due to high anti squat giving away quickly to very usable travel when there are steps and rocks.

I was worried that with the regression the rear suspension would bottom out easily but it seems that Mondraker have tuned the DPX2 suitably to prevent this. I have not checked how many spacers (if any) have been installed to reduce the volume of the shock.

Hey, Antonio!
I currently own an alloy Foxy 2016 with a 160mm fork and I'm really having a difficult time deciding on what to upgrade to. I have in mind the Foxy XR alloy 29 with coil in the back and Lyrik up front, and Dune R alloy. I would love to have the extra roll over, traction and inertia of the 29, but I'm a bit worried that it's going to be hard to manage on slower, twisty sections of trai. Also, I heard that the Dune is actually plusher than the Foxy 29.
What do you say/reccomend?
I mainly ride natural trails with roots and rocks, and with pretty big uphills and I really want to improve the overall feel of the bike in the high speed chunk, where my current Foxy reaches its limits.

Hola everybody,

Muchas gracias!

Hello,

it has been a while since this has been posted but would you be kind and help me out on where to find these information from? I am looking these in order to do a custom bottom linkage and I am using linkage design software for this purpose

Ibon dijo...

Buenas Antonio,
